My hifi journey with the Trio15 Coax
As an audiophile, I am a tweaker – constantly seeking ways to extract the best sound from my system (typically centered around my latest amp or speaker). I appreciate that nothing is simply plug and play, no matter what I paid for it, because real-world conditions could invalidate all those gushing reviews. I am also a traveler, seeking to try different methodologies for assembling systems. My new journey, since trying tube-based amps in late 2020, is exploring low power SET amps with high sensitivity speakers. Having owned many powerful SS amps and different speakers, I wondered if it could practically be done.
Your speaker and modular design approach have enabled this, and so much more. It is the ultimate platform for tweakability and personalization. It has taught me about speaker crossover components, allowing me to learn to easily tweak an area that has a huge impact on sound quality, but typically warranty-voiding and inaccessible inside a box speaker. Its value is also very honest – what you see is what you get – quality components, in plain sight, nothing hidden behind fancy marketing. Its expandability also means I am not stuck – the sound can be tailored far more to one’s preferences, beyond the usual tweaks like placement, cables, and footers. It’s a real-world speaker for my far-from-ideal room – no side wall interactions, and it lets me minimize room treatments. There is no more heavy vibration going into my equipment rack. And the sound? It’s shown me that scale, texture, and impact exist in reproduced music, especially with percussion, bass, and voices, even with a 2a3-powered SET. Voices are pure and beautiful, and the music is effortless, uncongested, full-bodied, vivid, and easy to listen to for hours on end. Things that for me are a must for an engaging and emotion-eliciting experience.
It was a leap of faith to buy them, it was my first open-baffle speaker, and two and a half years later – I can confidently say I am so glad I did. It puts me in the driver’s seat – my audiophile journey has become far more enjoyable and hands-on. I look forward to many more audio journeys with these speakers as a foundation knowing I can expand to the Quintet15 or try a different center drivers.
Thank you, Ze’ev, for all you and your creations have done for the hifi community and this hobby. I have appreciated your ability and willingness to help your customers find the sound they are looking for.
